(this is the warmest part of the day!)
March is taking this in like a lion thing a bit too seriously. This is an improvement from this morning when the "feels like" was in the negative. My walk to the T was brutal. I live in the water and the winds are awful some mornings. eek. I need a ski mask.

Thank you everyone for your advice here and on Facebook on the cruelty free products.I really really appreciate it. I had been buying more natural and organic products already (because of Dave) so I were pleased to discover last night we had very few things that were tested on animals. Deodorant, dishwasher detergent, toothpaste, clorox wipes, the rest of it was already cruelty free. While to some it might seem I grabbed onto this quick, there were lots of comments on Monday from people talking about animal testing and I was disappointed in myself, hard core. I gotta be honest I thought I was already being a good consumer I wasn't knowing doing any of it. (I wasn't investigating though) and we talked about it and said we are going to approach it exactly how we did Celiac and Gluten free. We have to decide who we will rely on for status, we have to contact questionable companies and we might have to make special trips to get supplies but we are already doing that for GF so it shouldn't be a big deal. With our girls too we don't need to be using such harsh stuff anyways. The toothpaste and deodorant are the only things I might struggle with. I have sensitive teeth and Dave has tooth issues (celiac side effect) so we use Sensodyne and it's the only one we both could use and helped. Tom's didn't work for us. I will be investigating options for when our tube runs out.

Now none of this is 100% easy nor am I going to pretend it is. I have extremely sensitive skin and with Dave's Celiac there are plenty of things that are the "only thing that works for us".  Hell I have lots of things I use and am sad that I won't be repurchasing but I have to decide what I am OK and what I am not OK with. It is going to different for everybody. But I'd rather take my chances and try new thing on myself than repurchase things I had been using knowing what they do. I am not judging others if they decide to, it is honestly a very personal decision. I even told Dave I would understand if he didn't want to do it, hell I eat gluten so who am I to judge. But he wants to do it.

He might be a bigger animal lover than I am.

You're too young!

Waffle want to help!

P.S would anyone be interested in hearing about the Shellac nail treatment I had done?

im DEFINITELY interested in hearing about your nail treatment!

personally, i am definitely *interested* in being a better consumer, i just dont think im quite ready for all the work that comes along with it, just yet. i am trying to better myself in several other areas of my life, so im a little stressed out with just those things. i appreciate info you provide, though, so if, in the future, i want to make these changes, i know where to go!
i have so much respect for all of the bloggers who buy/dont buy certain brands or shop/dont shop at certain places because of their moral/political beliefs. you love your fur-kids, so it makes sense for you to shop accordingly! good work, doll. :)

I love my fur kids more than I like most people. :) They love me unconditionally.

I already call and write companies virtually daily for GF status so I am totally used to it. I wrote my first letter to a company when I was 10 (wise potato chips) . Seriously though I was brought up doing that I am a natural questioner and some people just aren't. When pop died we found a note pad of letters he had drafted to the newspaper, the tv news, George Bush, state govenenor etc....
Dave for example though, he'd rather suffer through things or struggle with it than pick up the phone and call.

You are such an inspiration with all your efforts at cultivating social consciousness. Its even more inportant where animals are concerned, as they don't have voices to speak on behalf of themselves, so its our job to see that they are treated well.

As for the shellac nail treatment - review on I'd love to hear. I for one am all over the potential for a 14 day manicure.

It's hard to be as conscious now that I am living with my parents and brother again since some products are shared and I don't think the boys really care much about animal testing. I definitely love that you are, though, and feel like it's a kick in my butt that I should be too.

BTW - your 'stache picture looks surprisingly attractive for a Hilary with facial hair, lol. I mean that in the most non-creepy way possible. I personally revel in the fact that I look NOTHING like my dad. Apparently my red hair comes from his side of the family, but who is still a mystery.

I get the red from my dad too. I look exactly like my dad and exactly like my mom. The two of them look nothing alike.
Did you ever watch Carnivale? The beared lady my mom totally thought she was cute. Not weird at all.

The only natural, cruelty-free deodorant that worked for me (and I tried them ALL) is the Liquid Rock made by Kiss My Face. It's a roll-on, so you need to give it a minute to dry. But it seriously lasts 24 hours, won't turn your shirt armpits yellow, and will let you sweat without stinking. The lavender and the unscented are both great. I don't recommend the patchouli unless you LOVE patchouli!

This tip passed on to me from someone else who tried it all...and now I pass on to you. Liquid Rock FTW!

I definitely would like to hear about your experience with shellac...I have been wanting to try it.
Love your mustache and all of today's great accessories!

I used to look a lot like my mom and now I just look like a me. Everyone is always surprised when I point out my parents in a crowd, they're never the ones people thought they would be. Totally loved Carnivale, so sad that we'll never know what happened! I also may or may not see where your mom was coming from... haha

The expression on your face with the moustache pic is priceless! What jacket are you wearing in that pic? It's very cute and fits you so well. I like how it's loosely fitted, but not bulky.

The kitty pics are so cute! Especially the one with Dave and all the kittens. I miss when my two cats were small. My old man is 12 now, so it's been a while, but NOTHING is cuter than a teeny kitten! Except maybe lots of teeny kittens.

And yes, I'd like to hear about your shellac experience. I tried the nail sticker things and did not really like them, so my the next nail thing on my list to try is the Shellac treatment. Does it make your nails harder or protect your natural nails? Would love to hear your thoughts on it!

ha! I totally forgot the outfit details! Shellac post is now up too. I miss baby kittens SO MUCH.

I commend you for being so conscious about your purchases. I'm thankfully not allergic to anything, but am highly limited in the options I can make. I'm not much of a product user to begin with, but as far as I know my hair products are all cruelty free. I've tried every affordable 'natural' brand available of moisturizer in stores, but neutrogena is the only thing that doesn't destroy my face. =[ Still looking for a better option though!

If it helps any - there are many natural, safe options for cleaning supplies. Lemon, baking soda and vinegar are good places to start.

hillary said...

Have you ever tried lush or origins moisturizers? Both will give you samples.
Arm and hammer is a tester! I need a new baking soda. I have organic cleaning supplies already but the clorox wipes are for ummm cat issues. We need to just get some
Different wipes. White vinegar isnt gluten free but I do use apple cider vinegar to clean bathroom.

Oh the kittens. I LOVE the kitten pictures!

I really adore the stripes with the scarf. You look great!!!
