Adventures in home hair cutting.

I have cut my husband's hair for a little over 10 years now. I learned how from Todd Oldham bit on House of Style. (yeah so mid 90's?) So at first it was fun to cut this hair but after all these years I have lost my confidence and feel like a barber would make him look more polished. But I do it and everytime I say it will be the last. I fear he looks like he has a home hair cut. But all that said he looks good and I do a pretty decent job. My mom is a hairdresser so I tell myself I know by default. (I know faulty logic, dad's a carpenter and swinging a hammer is a scary sight from me)

Note in the above picture is his haircut I did about 15 minutes before this photo was taken.

I dye my own hair and have off and on for 17 years or so. Starting in 8th grade when my mom let me put purple streaks in my hair. The last time I got my hair cut the guy asked who did my color and when I said myself he said I'd be insane to pay someone to do it if I did this good a job. He even called people over to see how I had no "lines of demarcation" But as I said before its messy and smelly and time consuming and I am tired of doing it. But I soldier on.

Yesterday I asked my husband if he could cut my hair. I have had 2 trims in 2 years because every single time I leave unhappy. I have insanely thick hair and its hard to deal with. They always chop too much and are wimpy in other areas. I wanted face framing layers and he did this wimpy little like one inch thing. As my mom says you need to do drastic things for them to even show up on my hair its just so thick.

My husband is an architect (unlicensed but I decided yesterday that it was time to call him that) He is very literal, perfectionist and has no idea how to think outside the box. Percision is key with him. He will fuss until its perfect. Hey to me that sounds like someone who can cut my hair!

I told him how I wanted it to angle down in the front and how I needed all the dead ends chopped off. He spent a good 5 minutes just combing it and walking back and forth. I knew he was silently freaking out. I also knew he loved me too much to screw it up. He finally started and even said how he was going to "have to take more off the back if I really want all the dead ends gone" heee.

The results? FANTASTIC. I have an ultra-mod 60's hair-do. Just what I wanted. I can flip it in the opposite direction for the 70's Farrah look. He went really deep in the front with the layers. My mom happened to call as I was uploading pics and she was very impressed. She is alarmingly honest too so you know she liked it. (hi mom!)

He is gonna regret he ever cut it. I think I found a new hairdresser.

Your stylist is very good. It's a precision cut, and he has the eye for it.
